this bike has back pedal brakes, not hand brakes, the reason I am informed by the Mongoose representative is. quote "Kids just starting to ride cannot use a hand brake but take to a pedal brake very quickly, the next bike you get in the size range has both hand and pedal brakes and the upgrade from that has only hand brakes" unquote
