EOS 7D incorporates a newly developed 18-Megapixel APS-C Canon CMOS sensor to render ultra-fine images with stunning details. With enhanced sensor technology, the distance between gapless microlenses and photodiodes has been reduced to strengthen sensor's light-gathering capabilities. Moreover, the re-designed photodiodes structure with enhanced photoelectric conversion rate, which improves signal to noise ratio and make High ISO speeds possible. |
Dual "DIGIC 4" Digital Image Processor
By having Dual "DIGIC 4" digital image processor, EOS 7D processes image data in lightning speed, allowing 14-bit analog-to-digital conversion of the EOS 7D. Each of the RGB channel can record up to 16,384 levels which is 4 times of 12-bit conversion, retaining the image's true detail and achieving natural color reproduction. This ensures better tonal gradation and more even flow of colors from highlight to shadow.
EOS 7D offers a wide range of ISO sensitivity from 100 to 6,400 and is expandable to ISO 12,800, with guarantee on high quality image and significant noise control performance, offering great flexibility for handheld shooting in low light. The provision of ISO 100 allows users to use large aperture (f/1.2 or f/1.4) for portrait in bright outdoor, and enables longer exposure time for landscape shooting with greater flexibility. Auto ISO is now supported in Manual exposure mode to make shooting even more convenient.
With this powerful processor, a host of automatic image correction features are provided to cope with tricky photographic conditions. The Peripheral Illumination Correction compensates for light falloff at the corners of the image commonly brought by the optical characteristics of wide-angle lenses, ensuring even brightness across the image field. The Auto Lighting Optimizer preserves accurate exposure of highlights while opening up shadowed areas for fine image details through analysis of subject's brightness. It is also available in Manual Exposure Mode for the first time. |
8 Frames per Second of 14-bit Images
| Thanks to the power of Dual "DIGIC 4" and a new mirror bouncing preventing mechanism, coupled with high power battery LP-E6 and an optimum electrical design, even without the need of external battery grip, continuous shooting of 14-bit images at 8 frames per second is made possible. Up to 126 JPEG or 15 RAW images can be continuously captured using a UDMA Mode 6 CF card, every not-to-miss moment is precisely frozen. What's more, EOS 7D adopts the same shutter release structure as EOS-1D series and the shutter lag is merely 59ms, realizing the fastest performance among APS-C models. |

19-point all cross-type AF System
The newly developed AF System features all cross-type19-point AF sensors which detect both horizontal and vertical lines for better focusing performance. They evenly spread out across the viewfinder, allows easier focus on off-center subject. All 19 points are f/5.6-sensitive, while the center AF point adds high-precision diagonal cross-type sensitivity for f/2.8 for enhanced accuracy. A dedicated microcomputer for AF calculations is featured in EOS 7D to improve AF accuracy and reliability. A host of AF tracking related Custom Function (C. Fn) is featured which can tailor for professional usage, for instance, to set the AI Servo tracking sensitivity. With all these advanced AF system design, EOS 7D provides accurate and reliable auto-focusing performance for assignments varied from fast-moving sports action to low-light wedding ceremonies.
The 19-point cross-type AF System features 5 AF Area selection modes, among them Spot AF and Zone AF are EOS's first. Spot AF mode reduces the size of a single AF point to focus on small subjects; Zone AF divides the 19 AF points into five selectable focusing zones and makes it easier to achieve focus with subjects that are difficult to track with Single Point AF or AF point expansion. Inherited from EOS-1D series, AF Point Expansion mode uses a cluster of AF points adjacent to the selected AF point to automatically assist focusing on moving subject even when the subject is off-centered. |

| Additionally, the new AF system introduces AI Servo AF II algorithm that offers enhanced tracking accuracy by fast and correct prediction of movements, free from the short-term effect caused by other objects. AI Servo AF II also optimize auto focus performance in macro photography, to further enhance the ratio to obtain sharp macro images by auto focus. |
iFCL Metering with 63-Zone Dual-Layer Metering Senor

Adopting the new iFCL (Intelligent Focus, Color, Luminance) metering system, the 63-zone dual-layer metering sensor in EOS 7D detects color spectrum for more stable and balanced auto exposure. While the 1st layer of sensor detects red and green wavelengths in RGB primary colors the 2nd layer detects blue and green wavelengths. Comparison on the data obtained by both layers lead to the calculation of optimum exposure time. This avoids subjects in red to easily appear under-exposed when using ordinary metering system. Also by detecting the light sources, the metering system minimizes focusing inaccuracy caused by different light spectrum. For more accurate exposure, the system takes into account the AF Point information from all AF points to recognize main subject location and size. Meanwhile, exposure compensation is expanded to +/-5EV for easy achievement of High Dynamic Range (HDR) image. |
Best-of-the-Class Viewfinder, Super Fluid Body Design and Shutter Sound
EOS 7D incorporates a best-of-the-class viewfinder with 100% coverage and 1.0x magnification, and uses a large pentaprism and eyepiece lenses similar to those used in EOS-1D Mark III, providing users with the best viewing perspective and vision. With 100% coverage, no unseen object hiding at the peripheral, results in more accurate composition. This new intelligent viewfinder uses a transmissive LCD to display focusing points and zones, on-demand grid lines and a spot metering circle, offering the convenience to users to choose for information to display that helps in framing. The pentaprism is coated with an anti-reflective coating to ensure a bright viewfinder display even with the use of transmissive LCD overlay.
EOS 7D features a super-fluid body design that fits better in user's hand. With spherical body design achieved by Surface Transforming, the body outline of EOS 7D is formed by continuous curves that flow naturally to give users a delightful touch. Canon has also interviewed advanced amateurs worldwide to find out what constitutes for the most desired shutter sound and finally arrived at the new design for EOS 7D - a mirror vibration reduction mechanism to reduce the vibrations and careful selections of material, therefore generate a, crisp and ideal metallic sound, which bring both auditory and operational enjoyment to its users. |
3-inch 920,000-dot Clear View II LCD Monitor

The 3-inch 920,000-dot Clear View II LCD monitor found in EOS 7D includes a photoelastic material filled between the LCD panel and strengthened glass protective panel to form one durable single unit. By using photoelastic material with the same refractive index as the protective panel, light is able to pass through the unit without causing reflections. This enhances viewing ease and accuracy even under strong sunlight. Furthermore, the photoelastic material can prevent dirt from penetrating between the LCD panel and protective panel. Monitor brightness is adjusted automatically in response to ambient light level, for optimal viewing under different lighting. |
Live View Mode

EOS 7D features a new dedicated Live View Shooting/Movie Shooting Switch that provides direct and convenient switching between modes. The Live View mode features three AF modes, including "Live Mode", "Face Detection Live AF Mode" and "Quick Mode". Final Image Stimulation displays image result of camera setting instantly, thus conveniently eliminates having to return to the menu display to change settings. |
EOS Full HD Movie Shooting
EOS 7D record Full HD at 1920 x 1080 pixels in selectable frame rates of cinematographic 24fps (23.976fps), NTSC standard at 30fps (29.97fps) and PAL standard at 25fps, allowing easy creation of professional videos in your preferred style. The EOS Full HD Movie shooting mode is also improved with manual exposure control for greater shooting flexibility. Users can manually adjust aperture, shutter speed and ISO speed based on shooting conditions. EOS 7D provides an external stereo microphone to eliminate background noise for professional audio effects. With HDMI connectivity, shape images and videos can be output to HD devices for instant playback.
EOS 7D also incorporates a built-in movie editing function for easy movie editing: user can trim the movie's beginning and ending frames directly in the camera, saving time and effort in post-editing stage. |
Integrated Speedlite Transmitter and Dual-Axis Electronic Level
For more convenient wireless flash operation, EOS 7D is equipped with an Integrated Speedlite transmitter for wireless flash master control with internal flash. Like Speedlite 580EXII, users can simply control the slave flash through camera menu. Multiple groups of slave flashes can be connected to create the best lighting for studio and wedding portrait shooting.
EOS 7D also features a new built-in dual-axis electronic level for easy and accurate composition. Precise horizontal leveling guarantees perfect composition not affected by perspective and lines appearing in the frame is especially useful for architecture and landscape shooting. The dual-axis electronic level can be shown on viewfinder and LCD screen to cater different shooting needs when taking images or videos. |

Reliable and Rough Camera Body

EOS 7D is characterized by a tough and lightweight magnesium alloy body. The durability of the rotary magnet shutter as found in EOS-1D series has achieved a stunning 150,000 cycles. Combining battery compartment and memory card slot opening covers as well as circumference of the camera buttons fitted with sealing materials, the adoption of high precision split-level alignment of the magnesium-alloy external covers seams, high precision construction of dials' rotating axis, and external grip rubber covers, the optimal design of camera parts and structure contributes to an improved dust- and water-resistance performance. EOS 7D also features an upgraded EOS Integrated Cleaning System which includes a special fluorine coating on the low-pass filter for better resistance to moist and sticky dust. |
