15.1-Megapixel CMOS Sensor
|
The EOS 50D incorporates a new CMOS sensor, a uniquely Canon creation, with the highest level of resolution in its class at 15.1-Megapixel. The result is ultra-detailed images that are ideal for large-scale reproduction. The gapless microlenses over the pixels and the re-designed photo diodes, enhanced by new manufacturing processes, extend the sensor's light-gathering capabilities, allowing an increased number of pixels to be fitted on the CMOS sensor, without compromising image quality. All these make for a wide range of sensitivities, from ISO 100 to the ultra-sensitive ISO 12800, for the first time. |

DIGIC 4 Image Processor
|
At the heart of EOS 50D is Canon's unique DIGIC 4 digital image processor, at which it is making its debut. The processor, with a 30% increase in digital processing speed, offers a high-speed rendering of fine detail, 14-bit natural colour reproduction and lower noise. DIGIC 4 also offers additional features that enhance camera performance and image quality such as the real-time face detection AF during Live View shooting, the new Peripheral Illumination Correction, the enhanced Auto Lighting Optimizer, flexible RAW options (RAW / sRAW 1 / sRAW 2), UDMA Mode 6 (133MB/s) CF memory card interface compatibility, and HDMI connectivity. |

6.3fps high speed continuous shooting
| Thanks greatly to the new DIGIC 4 Digital Image Processor and CMOS sensor's high speed 4-channel output, along with the double-sized DDR2-SDRAM buffer memory, the EOS 50D is fast enough to capture up to 6.3 frames per second of 15.1-Megapixel resolution 14-bit images, in bursts of up to 90 JPEGs with a UDMA CF card. |

High Precision 9 cross-type AF point System
To match with the high continuous shooting speed, the EOS 50D is equipped with the renowned high-performance Autofocus (AF) system. It uses nine cross-type sensors with sensitivity up to f/5.6, spread out across the AF area to better accommodate off-centre subjects. Moreover, the EOS 50D supports f/2.8 vertical and horizontal sensitive cross-type central AF sensor – when used with lenses with a maximum aperture of f/2.8 or brighter, thus even more responsive and more precise AF results can be achieved even in low-light conditions.
The AF Microadjustment feature, introduced last year with the EOS-1D Mark III, has been included to the EOS 50D for maximum control over focusing perfection. The useful AF light source detection is also added for correcting focus shift caused by the spectral characteristics of different light conditions. This is especially helpful in artificial light conditions. All these features, together with a bright 0.95x magnification viewfinder with interchangeable focusing screen, make the EOS 50D ideally suited to sports and wildlife photography. |

New 3-inch Clear View LCD monitor
|
The EOS 50D incorporates a new 3-inch Clear View LCD monitor, with a resolution of 920,000 dots, giving a finer details and color reproduction closer to the sRGB color space common in PC environment. With its multiple anti-reflection coating, the monitor can be viewed easily even under direct sunlight. A fluorine coating is added to resist against smudge. Photo review has become that much easier, and with a much higher degree of precision. |
| |
Live View Mode with Live Face Detection mode AF
|
The improved LCD monitor is utilized by the EOS 50D's enhanced Live View Mode, which offers a new auto-focus mode, the “Live Face Detection mode AF”, which can detect up to 35 individual forward-looking faces, giving better focus and clarity in group or portrait shots. Live View Mode is now, more intuitive and convenient to use with the dedicated Live View Mode toggle button. In Live View Mode, the user can now access directly most menu operations and camera settings, including shooting mode, image playback and AF frame selection as in normal shooting. |
| |
Peripheral Illumination Correction
|
The EOS 50D performs corrections for peripheral illumination automatically, compensating for light falloff at the corners of the image commonly brought by the optical characteristics of wide-angle lenses. This function ensures that brightness is spread evenly across the image field; a blue sky, for example, will be evenly toned throughout. This adjustment, helped largely by the DIGIC 4 Digital Image Processor, can be automatically done in-camera while shooting with JPEG images. Correction data of up to 40 Canon lenses can be registered in the EOS 50D via the bundled EOS Utility software. |
| |
Auto Lighting Optimizer
| Helping to ensure each photo's subject is clearly visible while beautifully lit, EOS 50D's enhanced Auto Lighting Optimizer analyses the brightness of the subject and automatically adjusts dark areas to look brighter, which is perfect for low contrast subjects in shades or in backlit situations. Three levels of correction are available in the EOS 50D for more brilliant results. |
| |
New Creative Auto Mode
|
The EOS 50D is built with the novice photographer in mind. The new Creative Auto (CA) mode, a step forward against the Full Auto mode, allows the user to make easy and intuitive adjustments without having to keep in mind or understand dated and arcane photography terminology, such as "aperture", "exposure compensation", and so on. The camera menu spells out in simple, clear and day-to-day language exactly what is required: the user knows when to "blur the background" or "lighten or darken the image". The beginner needs simple language and clear directions for creative camera usage. These easy-to-comprehend options help advancing beginners to acquire new techniques and improve the creative shots they are capable of taking. |
| |
|
In addition, the new Quick Control screen displayed on the LCD monitor provides fast access to most essential camera settings with the camera's Multi-Controller, allowing quick and easy adjustments from just one screen. |
| |
Upgraded EOS Integrated Cleaning System
|
The Self-Cleaning Sensor Unit in the Canon EOS 50D has been upgraded to include a fluorine coating that gives the low-pass filter better resistance to moist and sticky dust. Each time the camera is powered up or shut down, ultrasonic vibrations effectively shake off dust particles that may have collected on the low-pass filter in front of the sensor. The system also includes a software component. Dust spots on the sensor are mapped and saved as Dust Delete Data, which is appended to the image file, and can be removed during post-processing using the bundled Digital Photo Professional software. |
| |
Reliable Camera Body
|
The EOS 50D is made of a highly durable magnesium alloy but weighs only 730g. The ergonomic design makes for a perfect grip and smooth operation. The precisely engineered cover seams, high precision construction of dial's rotary axis, and the sealing on the battery compartment and memory card area make the camera more resistant to dust and moisture. |
| |
|
At the core of the EOS 50D is a reliable electromagnetic shutter rated at 100,000 cycles, with a shutter lag time of only 59 msec. The EOS 50D can withstand even the most robust field use. |
