Australian Red Cross is running an appeal to assist people affected by the huge 9 magnitude earthquake and more than seven metre tsunami, which hit north east Japan. Further tsunami swamped other areas of Japan. Many areas across the Pacific were affected due to the tsunami. In Japan, more than 4,000 have died. Thousands are missing and injured.
Authorities say the total death toll is anticipated to exceed 10,000 people. Australian Red Cross is running the Japan and Pacific Disaster Appeal 2011 to assist those affected by the disaster. You can donate to the appeal now. Australian Red Cross is assisting as part of an international support team for this disaster. Australian Red Cross is on standby to further assist our partner organisation, Japanese Red Cross Society in the response to this disaster. Many Japanese Red Cross volunteers are distributing relief items, including more than 65,000 blankets, ensuring displaced people are offered hot meals, clearing debris and providing medical transportation. A Red Cross specialist helicopter team has evacuated people from rooftops and assisted with transporting medicine and food to hospitals. Japanese Red Cross has sent 85 medical teams, made up of over 735 people, including doctors and nurses to the affected area. Red Cross is also offering personal support to affected people.
